10 At-Home Activities You Can Do to Pass the Time

Before COVID-19, you couldn’t find time to do all the things you needed to do. Now that you must stay at home, you’ve got nothing but minutes, hours, and days to spend as you choose. If you’re going stir-crazy trying to find ways to fill your time, don’t worry. People around the world are adapting to their ‘new normal’ in fun and creative ways. You can follow suit by making the most of your time working from home and being with your family morning, noon, and night.

Here are ten at-home activities that you can do to pass the time:

  1. Rethink your living space. If you have the urge to shop, forgo the stores in favor of using what you have in your house. You can rearrange furniture, repurpose items and change their look, and even create the things that you would ordinarily buy online. If you want to breathe new life into your living space, all you need is some time, which you have plenty of, and creativity.
  2. Plant a garden. There has never been a better time than today to plant seeds, physically and figuratively. If you’ve wanted to have a garden for years but never seem to get one started, now is the time to change that. Even a small garden can increase your food supply exponentially. It gives you security during times of uncertainty.
  3. Learn how to cook another country’s cuisine. If you miss eating at restaurants, why not try to recreate the experience at home? There are many websites and blogs you can consult for recipes that feature the cuisine you would find in other countries. Take your taste buds on a trip. Use the foods, herbs, and spices you have on hand to make it a real challenge.
  4. Go on a virtual retreat. Many individuals and companies are offering free retreats, seminars, and summits online. Take advantage of their generosity by signing up for one today. Make time in your calendar to watch the videos, listen to the audio clips, and to do the activities suggested by the teachers.
  5. Invent a new board game to play. It’s a great activity to do with kids. Use a poster board or cardboard to create the playing board. Then, create pieces using the arts and craft supplies you have lying around the house.
  6. Visit a museum, landmark, zoo, or aquarium virtually. A completely free alternative to going out in public, you can visit the places that you always wanted to see online. Go to a famous museum like the Louvre, a popular zoo or exciting aquarium. Interact with the exhibits and animals the way you would in-person.
  7. Take a free course. There are 100s of free classes online. All you need to do is sign up for them. Skillshare, Coursera, and even Yale have free options for you to choose from currently. You can also download course material for an offline option.
  8. Revamp your blog or your resume. When things turn around worldwide, you’ll want to be ready. If your blog or resume needs an upgrade, now is the time to do it. That way, when life goes back to normal, you won’t be left behind wondering why everyone else is moving forward with their lives.
  9. Visit with your family and friends online. Reaching out to the people you care most about is imperative during trying times. You can still contact them by phone, email, and social media. Let them know that you’re thinking of them and ask if they need anything.
  10. Start a new hobby. Channel your energy into something positive. You likely have a skill you’ve wanted to learn all this time. Fortunately, there are free blogs and video tutorials to help you master your new craft.

There is no better time than today to do all of the projects you’ve been putting off. Now that you’re at home, you have the opportunity to get things done. You can slay that to-do list like a boss and feel better about your home, time management skills, and priorities long into the future. If you’ve been looking for excuses to get things done, being at home for indefinite lengths of time is it!
