With the changing climate all across the country, it can be difficult to make time for a getaway this year. Travel has been restricted so immensely in 2020, making it nearly impossible for one to journey beyond their own backyard. Faced with the decision to either get creative or stay in the living room, many are looking for COVID safe places to visit right in their hometown. But with restaurants and shops finally opening up again, you may be able to spread your wings a bit more statewide.
What if I told you there is a beautiful city in Northern California that boasts some of the most breathtaking bay scenery? Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, it’s home to some of the bay’s most beautiful marshes and charming museums. In case you haven’t already heard, here are top five reasons to visit Redwood City in San Mateo County!
1) Bair Island
Opened in 2015, Bair Island is one of the largest islands in the South Bay. With over 3,000 acres to cover, there is so much to do and see. Home to incredible hiking trails, and a beautiful ecological reserve, this could be your next relaxing getaway.
2) Music on the Square
In the summer months, locals gather in Courthouse Square to listen to cover bands. A communal experience, food vendors in the area provide tasty delicacies. Families bring their children and lawn chairs. The Fox Theater also provides seating, and the bands usually play rock, jazz, and blues. Keep an eye out for this if you’re traveling to the area around Memorial Day or Labor Day!
3) Pulgas Water Temple
In 1934, the Pulgas Water Temple was built by the San Francisco Water Department to commemorate the construction of the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct. While the name may sound funny, the temple is an iconic image and popular for events like weddings! Open seven days a week, it’s architecture is reminiscent of Greek buildings without the hassle of globetrotting!
4) San Mateo County History Museum
Located in downtown Redwood City, the San Mateo County Museum showcases the rich history of the area. Reflective of the Italian Renaissance, the building is a product of the City Beautiful Movement, expanding from 6,000 to 40,000 square feet in 2006. The museum is housed in the old courthouse downtown, adding to its nostalgic romanticism!
5) Edgewood Park
If you’re looking to bask in the finest flora and fauna of the city, the Edgewood Park & National Preserve is the place to be! The park boasts a magnificent display of wildflowers each spring, with over 467 acres of woodlands and grasslands. Not to mention it’s located off of Interstate 280 and Edgewood Road, making it perfectly accessible to locals. Take a detour on your next trip to San Francisco and take in the natural beauty of this well-kept wildlife reserve!
You don’t need to venture far in order to satisfy that travel bug you’ve had since 2020 started. Places like Redwood City are satisfying to any local or tourist, you just need to know what you’re looking for! So why wait? Start planning your next “grand local” adventure!
